Overview
The Department of Statistics is looking for multiple undergraduate students to fill Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (TA) positions for STAT 311 during the Autumn 2026 quarter. These undergraduate TAs will be eligible to be rehired for the Winter 2027 and/or Spring 2027 quarters if positions are available, if satisfactory work has been performed, and if they continue to be eligible for employment as outlined below.
STAT 311 A is a 5 credit in-person course, while STAT 311 B is taught in an online, asynchronous format.
Eligibility
To be an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant for STAT 311, the applicant must:
- Be a UW undergraduate in good academic standing.
- Must have taken STAT 311 at UW.
- Have strong grades in relevant Statistics and Mathematics courses (e.g., STAT 311, STAT 394, STAT 342, STAT 391, and/or similar courses). Priority will be given to students with senior standing, who have taken advanced statistics courses.
- Be able to attend all in-person meeting times including:
- Any scheduled lecture and quiz section meetings
- Lectures W/F @ 3:30-5:00
- Sections: Th @ 3:30-5:30
- Weekly instructional team meetings
- Scheduled office hours
- Teaching training for quiz sections
The applicant must also:
- Be legally eligible to work in the USA
- Registered for at least 6 credits per quarter during the academic year (Aut-Spr).
- Not having any paid obligations through the UW that would cause them, in conjunction with this appointment, to work over 19.5 hrs/week.
- Be willing to work a minimum of 10 hours a week when needed (not guaranteed).

This application is for employment in Autumn 2026, but the Department of Statistics may select candidates from this pool for rehire in the following Winter and Spring 2027 quarters.
Job Description
TAs have varying time obligations of approximately 10-18hrs/week. TAs are required to attend all meetings, training, and course obligations. You are expected to be available to work during the entirety of the quarter.
Undergraduate TA duties and responsibilities will be discussed with the instructor before the quarter starts, and they will be part of the contract. These may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Attend lectures and quiz sections
- Facilitate discussions and give guidance during problem-solving exercises in lecture and quiz section meetings
- Hold regular office hours
- Answer student questions in person, via email, and on course discussion forums
- Manage and respond to course-related e-mail
- Grade assignments and assessments
- Proctor exams and quizzes
- Maintain grading records
- Attend instructor/TA meetings
- Act as liaison/mediator between student and professor
Compensation
The Undergraduate Teaching Assistant compensation is hourly work for a rate of $23.78 per hour.
