A regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Statistics was held via Zoom at 12:30pm, March 30, 2020. Daniel Pollack, Interim Chair, presided at the meeting. Kristine Chan was recording secretary.

Chair’s Remarks
The Department will be conducting faculty meetings via Zoom for the entire Spring quarter 2020 due to COVID-19. The list of open faculty meetings will soon be available on the website ( In terms of executive sessions, we are waiting to have clarity on how to conduct these meetings.

Regarding instructional efforts for this spring, there have been concerns about assessments and cheating. Further information will be given by the central administration. Dan reminded teaching instructors to be patient with students during this time and to keep up with the strong emphasis on communication and instruction.

Yen-Chi and Fang mentioned that the Statistics Seminars series will be held via Zoom this quarter. They have invited a few of our department students and faculty to speak but are still looking for people to fill up more empty slots.

In terms of updates on the faculty hiring efforts, Eric Laber (Professor candidate) and Yaniv Romano (Assistant Professor candidate) were given extensions on their offers. Their new deadlines has been set to mid-April.

Baidu, a Chinese internet company, has made a gift fund to a number of departments pertaining to mathematics, statistics, electrical and computer engineering, etc. About $10,000 will be allocated to each department and will be used to support seminar series where we invite seminar speakers. 

Committee Reports
Alex reported a few items from the previous Diversity committee meetings: The committee has been renamed to Diversity, Inclusion, Community, and Equity (DICE) committee. Kris Shaw is currently working with central IT to allow our website to have pronouns capability. A survey has been distributed to prospective students to get feedback on their visits during recruitment day. Unfortunately, the responses have been relatively low this year due to COVID-19. And finally, the Chair photos in the Multi-Purpose Room (MPR) will be moved to the Admin office, to free up space in the MPR for a bulletin board that is student focused and would allow postings for announcements, research, news, etc.

There being no announcements and new business, the meeting passed adjourned at 1:14pm.
