A regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Statistics was held via Zoom at 12:30pm, June 1, 2020. Daniel Pollack, Interim Chair, presided at the meeting. Kristine Chan was recording secretary.

Chair’s Remarks

The meeting started with Dan sharing a message by Dr. Percy L. Abram the Head of School of the Bush School, followed by some of his own remarks.  These spoke to some the issues in today’s society with systemic racism.

Regarding return to work and return to school updates, our university is tied to Gov. Inslee’s plan of reopening the state by phases ( King County is still currently in Phase I but has applied to enter a modified Phase I. We have yet to hear about the results.

The UW office of the registrar has assigned each College and School to complete a Course Prioritization Exercise for Autumn 2020 to distinguish which courses could be taught online, need to be taugh in person, or should be cancelled. Dan, Abel, Daniela, Marina, Ranjini and Jon Wakefield collaborated to do this exercise and came to the consensus that almost all courses in Statistics could be taught online, however, Dan wants other faculty’s thoughts on this matter. He will be submitting the plan to the dean’s office on Wednesday, June 3. 

Dan then moved on to announcing a few items:

  • Julie Zhang, an undergraduate in Mathematics and Statistics, has been awarded 2020 A&S Dean’s Medalist for the Natural Sciences.
  • Department of Statistics graduation ceremony will be online: live and prerecorded on Friday, June 12 at 5:00pm PST.
  • The Ph.D. Research Prelim will be on June 11-12. Faculty meeting to discuss results will be on Monday, June 15 at 12:30pm.
  • The First year Theory Exam will be on June 16. A joint Biostatistics and Statistics faculty meeting to discuss the results will be on Friday, June 26 at 10:00am.


There being no other announcements, committee reports, and new business, the meeting passed into the executive session at 12:59pm.
