A regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Statistics was held in C-301 Padelford Hall at 12:30pm, December 2nd, 2019. Daniel Pollack, Interim Chair, presided at the meeting. Kristine Chan was recording secretary.

Chair’s Remarks
Daniel Pollack reminded the faculty about Holiday Party happening on Dec. 11 – food and drinks will be provided. Vickie Graybeal has sent an email out for faculty, postdocs, and staff to RSVP by Dec.4 at 12:00pm.

Pollack gave faculty the heads up about two email notifications they will receive: (1) National Alliance for Doctoral Students in the Mathematical Science (a.k.a. Math Alliance) (2) Directed Reading Program (DRP).

He encouraged faculty to enlist themselves in the Math Alliance. It is a program that started in Purdue University. It is an opportunity for faculty to become mentors to undergraduate students from underrepresented ethnic groups, families and/or regions that have little prior experience with doctoral studies in mathematical sciences.

Emily Flanagan, a senior undergraduate student, will be launching a DRP. It is a program to encourage undergraduate students of all backgrounds and skill levels to learn more about Statistics, and for graduate students to improve their teaching and mentoring skills. It will be run completely by students within UW.

There being no announcements, committee reports, and new business, the meeting passed into the executive session at 12:43pm and was adjourned at 2:00pm.
