The regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Statistics was held in a hybrid format via Zoom and in Padelford Hall, room C-301 at 12:30pm, May 20, 2024. Abel Rodriguez, Department Chair, presided at the meeting. Kristine Chan was recording secretary. 

Chair Remarks 

Labor action: The Chair provided an update on the ASE contract negotiation.  He indicated that an agreement has been reached and that the ASE union members have ratified the contract. 

Departmental bylaws & PhD Curriculum Review Committee proposals: The Chair indicated that there was a dealy, but that the poll for these items will be sent via statvotefac@ email by this week. 

Code of conduct: The Chair mentioned this topic to spark a conversation with the aim of developing such code of conduct starting Autumn 2024. 

Committee Reports  

DICE tribal collaboration proposal: The DICE Chair shared a document the describes the proposal from DICE to establish a collaboration between the Department of Statistics at UW and various Tribal environmental professionals, consortia, and organizations.  This project would involve 4-6 PhD students and 1-2 faculty from our department. The faculty was supportive of this project, and the Chair indicated that the proposal would move forward . 

DICE pulse survey report: The DICE Chair shared a folder with the pulse survey results. The goal of the survey is to guide DICE on what initiatives to focus on with the next academic year. The main take-away from the survey is that the department should work to establish an internal bias reporting mechanism to augment existing campus resources in this area. 

Continue PhD Curriculum Committee Review discussion: The PhD Graduate Program Coordinator shared a revised document on the PhD Curriculum Committee Review proposal and continued the discussion on changes to STAT 572 and the Prelim. The revisions seemed to address the concerns raised in previous discussions of the item.  Therefore, an electronic vote on the proposal will be conducted over the following week.
