The regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Statistics was held in a hybrid format via Zoom and in Padelford Hall, room C-301 at 12:30pm, May 6, 2024. Abel Rodriguez, Department Chair, presided at the meeting. Kristine Chan was recording secretary. 

Chair Remarks 

Labor action: The Chair provided updates on the labor action actions conducted by the ASE union in Bagley Hall, Life Sciences and Communications buildings. He also indicated that an ASE strike might happen on May 14 and that he would keep faculty informed of any updates. 

Announcements 

Departmental bylaws: The Chair shared another draft of the departmental bylaws. The Divisional Dean suggested one change to the document by adding a sentence on the MS Theory Exam, which is highlighted in yellow. The Chair is giving a week for feedback before sending out an electronic vote to finalize the policy. 

Department admissions cycle: The Undergraduate Program Coordinator reported that we had ~600 frosh applicants who indicated the Statistics B.S. as their top priority. About 37 of them were offered direct admission to the major.  The deadline to accept these offers is June 1, 2024.  

Committee Reports  

PhD Curriculum Review Committee: The PhD Graduate Program Coordinator shared two documents from the PhD Curriculum Review Committee describing proposed changes to the PhD track, the STAT 572 class, and the Preliminary Exam. Most of the discussion centered around the track changes.  The chair indicated that an electronic vote on the proposed changes to the tracks would be carried out within the next week.  Further discussion on the STAT 572 class and prelim, as well as any vote on the proposal, was deferred to the next faculty meeting due to the time constraint. 

DICE tribal collaboration proposal: This item has been deferred to the next faculty meeting due to the time constraint.
