The regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Statistics was held on Zoom at 12:30pm, April 5, 2021. Abel Rodriguez, Department Chair, presided at the meeting. Kristine Chan was recording secretary.
The meeting started with all participants sharing updates on personal news to allow the faculty, staff, and graduate student representatives to get reacquainted.
The Chair announced the following items:
- PhD program discussion will be held in the faculty meetings happening on 4/12 and 5/3.
- Town Hall meeting with Graduate Students will be held on 5/10. This is session is an opportunity for students to express their concerns and for faculty to listen. The Chair encouraged all faculty to attend.
- Department Graduation will be held online again, similar to last year’s set up. The Chair asked for faculty’s suggested names to give a speech for the undergraduates and the graduates. Suggestions/input can also be emailed to the Chair and the UPC, Ranjini Grove. He additionally informed the faculty that an email will be sent out to request recorded congratulatory videos to the students graduating.
Undergraduate Program: The Chair shared slides to discuss improving and expanding the BS program. The goal include improving diversity and student success, increasing the size of the program, adopting curricular guidelines from the American Statistical Association, and evaluating the relationship between the Statistics BS and other related programs (ACMS, Math, CSE, etc). A committee of ~5 faculty members that includes the Chair and the UPC will prepare a proposal by mid Spring 2022. The goal is for the new program to take effect in Autumn 2023 once campus approval has been granted. An action plan is set to be worked on over Summer 2021, which may involve using some department meetings to elicit information from broader set of faculty.
There being no other items to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 1:30pm.
