The regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Statistics was held on Zoom at 12:30pm, March 15, 2021. Abel Rodriguez, Department Chair, presided at the meeting. Kristine Chan was recording secretary.
The Chair announced that spring quarter teaching will continue to be remote. It is currently not clear as to how summer and autumn quarter teaching will be handled.
Minutes from the previous faculty meeting (3/8) were reviewed, voted on, and approved by the eligible voting faculty who were present.
Promotion and tenure guidelines: The Chair shared the guidelines that the personnel committee had drafted for the faculty to review. The goal of the guidelines is to clearly show the process and department expectations when a faculty member is up for promotion. Some faculty made a few suggestions to add and remove statements. Once the discussion concluded, the Chair asked faculty to send any additional feedback directly to him by Friday (3/19). He also informed the faculty that he will then conduct a catalyst poll vote on the guidelines the following week before submitting it to the College Council.
Department faculty mentoring framework: The Chair shared a second document that the personnel committee drafted for the faculty to review. The goal of the framework is to help outline mentoring junior faculty and to provide a nurturing environment for them to be supported so that they are successful in their role as they advance in their position. Similar to the promotion and tenure guidelines, the Chair asked the faculty for their feedback and informed them that he will then conduct a catalyst poll vote on the framework the following week.
