The regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Statistics was held on Zoom at 12:30pm, February 1, 2021. Abel Rodriguez, Department Chair, presided at the meeting. Kristine Chan was recording secretary.
Abel reminded the faculty to respond to Kris’s survey on instructional technology needs and software.
Ph.D. Admissions – financial offers: Abel shared his slides on changing the Ph.D. student support model in our department and the draft contingent financial offer letter. The goals of the changes are to become more competitive in attracting top and URM students, providing transparency to students on how funding works and what to expect, and aligning financial incentives with departmental goals and values. The process would be carried out in two phases. He asked faculty to provide feedback for both – Phase 1 by February 1 and Phase II by late March or early April to implement in the 2022 admission cycle.
Faculty discussed a student’s progress in the Ph.D. program and have vote to pass a particular student.
Updates on the tenure-track Assistant Professor search: Faculty discussed the eight candidates that had interviews and job talks in January. The census was clear that one candidate was not hirable, while the remaining were. The catalyst poll was sent out shortly after the faculty meeting was done to decide on the six candidates to invite for the next set of interviews (Tier 3).
There being no other items to discuss, the meeting passed to an executive session at 1:05pm and was adjourned at 2:05pm.
