The regular meeting of the faculty of the Department of Statistics was held on Zoom at 12:30pm, October 26, 2020. Abel Rodriguez, Department Chair, presided at the meeting. Kristine Chan was recording secretary.
Nancy Joseph, Director of Publications, from the College of Arts and Sciences is looking to get information from departments about recent faculty/staff awards and honors to be included in the Award section of the November issue of their newsletter called Perspectives. Abel encouraged faculty to get involved in nominations and to get their work recognized. The deadline to submit the information for November is November 11, 2020. It should also be submitted to email@example.com.
With the U.S. presidential elections coming up on November 3, 2020 and given the nature that it causes high anxiety and stress levels, Abel mentioned to faculty to take the election into consideration with their teaching schedules and to allow flexibility to students as they may be affected by it.
Daniela Witten, Chair of the Appointments committee, reported an update on the Assistant Professor search. As of October 26, 2020, we have 89 applicants. The Appointments committee will be providing a “very long list” to faculty on November 11 for feedback. Then on November 30, there will be faculty meeting to discuss the committee’s proposed Tier 1 list. Tier 1 interviews will be in early December.
Abel asked faculty if they had any knowledge about “consent calendars” to help with the process of approving faculty meeting minutes. However, given that faculty were not familiar with the term or tools for it, the discussion was deferred to the next faculty meeting to provide them more information.
Faculty present discussed nominations for the Dorothy Gilford Teaching award and the Z.W. Birnbaum award. The meeting then moved on to the progress and future of most current Ph.D. students. Since there was not enough time, the continuation of discussion of students were deferred to the next faculty meeting.
There was also a brief discussion on granting graduate faculty status with endorsement to chair for Abel and Ema Perkovic.
There being no other items to discuss, the meeting passed to an executive session at 12:46pm and was adjourned at 1:52pm.
