Daniela Witten is a Professor in the Departments of Statistics and Biostatistics, and the Dorothy Gilford Endowed Chair in Mathematical Statistics at the University of Washington. Her sister, Ilana Witten, is an Associate Professor in the Princeton Neuroscience Institute and the Department of Psychology at Princeton University.

The BRAIN Initiative recognizes that bringing scientists with different skills sets, viewpoints and expertise to work together on systems neuroscience will lead to the fastest possible progress. In particular, there is a growing need for statisticians to get involved in the field. Therefore, Daniela and Ilana have received funding through NIH from the BRAIN Initiative in order to develop statistical methods for the analysis of large-scale neuroscience data sets.
