The UW department of Statistics is very proud to announce that our department has received a generous donation from Brent Smith and Jill Smith, both proud UW alumni, to establish the Brent and Jill Smith Endowed Scholarship. This endowed scholarship fund will provide financial support to both undergraduate and graduate students.  The funds generated by this endowment in perpetuity will enhance the department’s long-term efforts to train the next generation of statisticians and data scientists by providing direct support to students who may not otherwise enroll in the department’s programs.

Support from the community plays a crucial role in the Department of Statistics’ ability to provide the best experience to our students and faculty – and we are so grateful to donors, like the Smiths, who are investing in our continued success. We invite those who are interested in the future of the department to consider a few ways to have an impact through giving:

  • Friends of Statistics – Perhaps one of the most important resources to the department, Friends of Statistics provides unrestricted support, providing the department with crucial flexible funding to address the current greatest need at the discretion of the chair.
  • Brent and Jill Smith Endowed Scholarship in the Department of Statistics – Should you be interested in joining the Smiths in supporting students, you can contribute to this endowment directly and expand crucial funding for generations of outstanding undergraduate and graduate Statistics students.
  • Z.W. Birnbaum Memorial Research Fellowship Fund in Statistics – In addition to providing financial support to incoming doctoral students, this fund also supports the Z.W. Birnbaum Award, which recognizes a PhD student for demonstrating outstanding progress and promise in theoretical, methodological, or applied research on the basis of their General Exam.

Should you be interested in making a gift to one of the funds listed above or have any questions about the impact you can have through your giving, please reach out to Hayley Miller, Assistant Director of Advancement, via email at or phone at 206.616.1989.
