We are pleased to announce that former UW Statistics Ph.D. student and alumnus, Renato Assunção, is the 2020 winner of a prestigious award by the Associação Brasileira de Estatística (ABE – the Brazilian Statistical Association) for his contributions to the field of statistics. Assunção will receive his award and give an online lecture on Friday, September 17th at 5:00pm to 6:00pm São Paulo, Brazil Time (1:00pm to 2:00pm Pacific Time). The broadcast will be held on ABE’s YouTube channel.
About Renato Assunção
Renato Assunção is a Professor of Statistics in the Department of Computer science at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) located in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. He received his Ph.D. in Statistics in 1994 from the University of Washington, advised by Emeritus Professor Peter Guttorp. His dissertation was on “Robust Estimation in Point Processes”.
Assunção’s research focuses on the development of new algorithms and statistical methods to analyze spatial and space-time data. He is primarily concerned with the spatial analysis of risk appearing in many fields such as epidemiological surveillance, geo-sensor networks, environmental problems, marketing, spatially variable risk spatially variable, among many others. The computer revolution, still going on, has made it possible to manage huge space-time databases. The extraction of interesting patterns from these massive databases create new, challenging, and interesting problems that require creative algorithmic, statistical and probabilistic solutions.
About ABE Award
The ABE Award honors a renowned Brazilian statistician who has contributed significantly for the development of teaching and research in Statistics in Brazil. The winner must have integrated in a unique way to the formation of human capital specialized in the area, through the supervision of dissertations and scientific works, or that has been an active member of initiatives of great impact for the country's statisticians and may also have distinguished itself by the constant and effective presence during the existence of the Brazilian Association of Statistics (ABE). The ABE Award aims to stimulate reflection and research activities in Statistics in Brazil and aims to be part of ABE's history.
