We are pleased to announce that Dante Ramirez has been awarded the Howard and Imogene Burton Memorial Scholarship for the 2022-2023 academic year. This scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to a highly deserving Washington State resident undergraduate student who is majoring in either the Social Sciences or the Natural Sciences. The award is based on academic merit and financial need.
Dante Ramirez is currently an undergraduate student majoring in Statistics and minoring in Bioethics, a combination of studies which in tandem allows for a well-rounded view of the fields he is passionate about, biostatistics and biomedical data science. Ramirez has been involved in activities and groups related to his field of study, such as being a math and science tutor, a member of the UW Statistical and Probability Association (SPA), and a Teaching Assistant for the Statistical Computing course (STAT 302). Currently, he is preparing to attend a 6-week NIH sponsored biostatistics summer event held at UC Irvine, where he will be collaborating with leaders in cutting edge biomedical data science. This event combines career mentoring in biostatistics in conjunction with hands on application of real-world data collected through NHLBI and NIH clinical trials. He anticipates to graduate by the end of Spring quarter 2023.
Ramirez plans to use the award funds towards tuition, general fees, and tools that will help him further his educational goals. “The 2022-2023 school year being the last in my undergraduate, I will now more than ever be actively collaborating with professors, students, and researchers in the Department of Statistics and Biostatistics, and I am very grateful for this scholarship as it will minimize the lingering worries of accumulating unsubsidized loan payments and other financial distractions that I will have during this time because of tuition”, says Ramirez, “I'm thankful this scholarship will grant me the ability to bring forth more opportunities.”
Congratulations to Dante on this fine achievement!
About the Howard and Imogene Burton Memorial Scholarship
Ellen Burton (BA in Economics, President’s Medalist, 1969) attended the University of Washington with assistance from tuition scholarships and the National Defense Student Loan Program. She established the endowment in memory of her parents who did not attend college and encouraged her to do so, particularly at the University of Washington.
