We are very proud to announce Alex Luedtke as the inaugural recipient of the Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award in the Department of Statistics. This biannual award, which is student-led, aims to recognize department faculty whose teaching has been transformative. This award recognizes Dr. Luedtke´s exceptional dedication to teaching the Advance Statistics Theory sequence, STAT 581, 582, and 583, during the years 2022 to 2024.
His nominators consistently praised his clear and thoughtful explanations, with one student in particular remarking, "Alex gave the most clear and helpful explanations of technical concepts that I have ever heard from any statistics professor."
His lectures are described as highly structured and methodical, providing students with a strong foundation for independent research. Alex “creates a safe environment in the classroom,” where he gives students ample time to ask questions and actively monitors student comprehension.
His commitment to accessibility is evident in his use of hybrid class formats, lecture recordings, and typed and written notes, ensuring all students can fully engage with the material. Several nominations mentioned his office hours as being “incredibly helpful,” as Alex avoids over-assuming prior understanding, checks in on students’ progress, and offers thoughtful guidance without simply giving solutions. As one student shared, “Alex really cares about the success of his students.
Given the number and depth of nominations received, we have no doubt that Professor Alex Luedtke is deserving of this award.
