Is the GRE General Test required?

The GRE General Test is optional.

Do I need to submit a GRE Mathematics Subject Test score?

The GRE Mathematics Subject Test is optional.

What departmental code should I use for the GRE Mathematics Subject Test and TOEFL reports?

The Department of Statistics code is 0705. The institution code for the University of Washington is 4854. The GRE must be taken within five years of application. TOEFL test scores are valid for two years and must be valid on the date the application is submitted.

I put the wrong department code on my test score request. Will it still reach you?

Yes. Scores are matched at the Graduate Enrollment Management Services office by name, social security number and/or birthdate. If they are not the same, their system will fail to make an automatic match.

I took the GRE/TOEFL multiple times. Which scores will you receive or consider?

The application will upload all valid score reports and all scores will be reviewed by the admissions committee.

I submitted my test scores for a previous year’s application. Do I need to resend them?

If you previously sent your test scores to the University of Washington, you do not need to resend them if they are still valid. These scores are retained on file and can be used for a future application. If the scores were sent for another program’s application, they can also still be used and the system will link them to your application.

Will you accept MyBestScore?

Yes, we will accept MyBestScores.

Should I contact a faculty member I’m interested to work with before applying?

No. This is not necessary. Applicants are selected for admission by our admissions committee, not by individual faculty members. All of our students are assigned a department advisor when they begin the program. Eventually, PhD students will also have a research advisor.

Can I apply for the Statistics PhD and MS programs at the same time? May I apply to two separate departments at the UW?

Yes. You will be required to submit two separate applications and fees.

If I apply to the PhD program, but do not get in, can I be considered for the Masters’s program instead?

Applicants who are denied to the PhD program may be considered for the MS program by submitting a separate application.

Can I get the application fee waived?

U.S. citizens and Permanent Residents who qualify on the basis of need may request a fee waiver from the Graduate School. International applicants are not eligible for fee waivers.

My education was in English. Do I still need to submit a TOEFL score?

Applicants who are not native English speakers, regardless of citizenship, must submit a valid, official TOEFL score, unless they have completed a bachelor’s degree at an accredited US university or a university in certain specific countries. Applicants whose degree was granted by an institution in Australia, the Bahamas, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago or the United Kingdom are automatically exempt from the TOEFL. If your education was from another country than those listed, you should provide documentation verifying that your undergraduate degree is from an institution where all instruction is in English. For more information, please refer to Policy 3.2 here.

My TOEFL score is over two years old. Can I still use it?

The TOEFL score must be less than two years old (at the time of application), unless you have or will receive a Bachelor, Master or Doctoral degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution (within the U.S.) or from an institution in Australia, the Bahamas, Canada, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, Singapore, Trinidad and Tobago, or the United Kingdom by the time of enrollment in our program, in which case you are exempt from taking the TOEFL.

My test score(s) will not be reported until after your deadline. Will you still consider my application?

Applications received or completed after the deadline will be considered late and will not be reviewed unless there is still space available in the program.

How strict is your deadline?

Complete applications must be received by the deadline to be considered. While we make every effort to notify applicants of missing items in time for them to complete their applications, it is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all materials reach us by the deadline.

Can I apply for Winter, Spring, or Summer quarter?

No, we accept applications only for Autumn quarter.

May I apply to transfer from a current UW graduate program, or obtain a concurrent degree in your program?

Current University of Washington graduate students seeking either to transfer to our program or an informal concurrent degree from our program should submit a Graduate School application. You must meet the same deadline as all other applicants for admission consideration.

Do I need to submit official transcripts?

Unofficial transcripts are accepted for the online application. If you are admitted to the program, the Graduate School will need an official transcript from your most recent degree-granting institution.

I submitted unofficial transcripts, but when I check my application status, it says “official transcript not received”. What should I do?

You may ignore this message. It as an automatic notification sent to all applicants for all University departments, because some departments do require official transcripts. If you are ADMITTED to the program, the University will require official transcripts, but you should NOT send them until after an admission decision is made.

How do I know if my application is complete?

Please check your application status page after submitting your application to track receipt of test scores and recommendation letters. If you have uploaded the required materials and your test scores and letters have been received, then your application is complete. Please rely on the application status page only; disregard any section of the application that refers to your application being incomplete or complete (our department does not utilize this function).

Do you accept recommendation letters from Interfolio or other recommendation letter services?

No, your recommenders must complete an assessment and upload their letter of recommendation through our online application system.

Can I update my Statement of Purpose, CV, Personal Statement? Can I update my transcript after my Autumn grades have been posted?

No, we do not accept updated materials after the deadline. We will contact you if we need to see any of your autumn grades.

If I send in my CV/transcript/paper, can you tell me my chances of admission?

Admission decisions are made based on a comprehensive evaluation of applications, in comparison with other applicants. We have a competitive application process, therefore, we cannot pre-review applications or indicate a chance of admission.
